The Grid

The Grid is an exercise used to increase stick control and mastery of rudiments. Essentially, a rudiment is played back to back while an accent pattern is moved through it. Tempo and overall dynamic range can also be varied for the drummer's aid. After a rudiment can be gridded starting on beat one, the drummer can also move the rudiment through the beat, while the accent pattern remains the same. While this may seem confusing, don't let it scare you. It is an exercise best learned by specific examples, so go ahead and read the sections on specific grids below.

Triplet Grids, as their name suggests, are accents moved through an underlying triplet pattern.
